2018

The year was an unusual one, filled with different opportunities and a few disruptions. Mark was unable to participate in some events as originally planned due to various family commitments and the ongoing reconstruction of his shop after it sustained fire damage in 2017. He is looking forward to a more "normal" year in 2019!

2018 AAW Symposium, Portland, OR

Picture

Mark was invited to participate in the Professional Outreach Program (POP) Exhibition, where the theme was Traditional Forms - Revisited. His efforts to find something uniquely appropriate for the geographic area led to the Marion Berry.

This elaborately detailed, life-like berry is made of Holly, with shades of red and purple and a gloss finish for that "juicy" appearance. The removable stem with attached leaves was hand-carved to fit perfectly into the core. The serving platter was turned from Maple, and the linen-looking piece that covers it was turned from Holly.

Mark also submitted an entry and was accepted into the juried exhibition for the symposium. The theme this year was Dia-log.

These Quacklings are a rare breed, where individuality is expected and accepted. With a language all their own, the little ones are excitedly engaged in respectful dialog with the older and wiser one. They seek to learn about the world around them, while anticipating their future achievements.

"Vortex"
See the photo to the right - Inspired by the stunning beauty of the red rocks of Sedona, this 8 1/2" diameter segmented maple vessel stands 21 1/4" tall overall. The textured surfaces curving around the body of the vessel present a dramatic contrast to the otherwise glossy sheen. Deep shades of red and brown at the base transition to a golden tint at the top, much like the rocks during sunset. Vortex, now comfortably settled in Las Vegas, is proud to have earned the honor of "Photo of the Week" on the website for the Segmented Woodturners chapter of AAW.
